Empire?

Prompt: America as Empire?

In the book "Why are we at War," Norman Mailer indicates that President Bush is trying to build an empire. Mailer writes as one of his main points, "Behind the whole push to go to war with Iraq is the desire to have a huge military presence in the Middle East as a stepping-stone to taking over the rest of the world." Well, I disagree with this statement.

I feel that if Bush really wanted to build an empire, he would already be in the process of building one. The war in Iraq is the effect of defending our country. When the attack of the twin towers happened on September 11, we as Americans had no choice but to go to war. Americans had to show the Middle East that they could not get away with taking innocent lives in America.

If Bush is wanting to build an empire, why is he not trying to get other countries involved? See empire is defined as "a group of countries or people with a single government." I have not seen any proof that Bush is trying to get other countries to come together as one. I know that Bush is trying to help Iraq establish their own government, but by what I have seen on the news, it is not a government that is even compatible to ours. I feel that Bush knows that world governments could never come together as one. All countries have a different way of governing their people. And I feel that we can not come together as one government.

In conclusion, I disagree with Mailer's comment. I do not feel that he supported his comment with actually proven facts. I feel that this book is strictly an opinion with no facts to back it up. And until I see proven facts to support this opinion, I have to stick to my opinion.
